The different image

In the novel, the absolutely true diary of a part time indian and in "Sorry for not Being a Stereotype" both share some ways in which Indians and many other cultures are stereotyped by their looks. I agree with both novels/articles because there's many cultures that are influenced by media and people. Most people that stereotype normally don't know much about the culture, they only know the image that media and others give them. Indians are known to be poor, red-faced, dressed in Pocahoochie outfits. Indians are known to live in teepees when they actually live in cities just like any other. The image shown by the media is an indian using feathered, buckskin, and beaded outfits, when they were gap and other clothes just like any other. I am Mexican and just like Indians we get stereotyped. People think Mexicans are poor, we live in small houses, we're dark skinned, we ride donkeys, and we are all illegal. Let me make this clear. We own big bussinesses, therefore, we are not poor. We live in big and small houses just like any other american. We definitely drive cars, and not all of us are illegal. My point is stereotypes change the whole image of different cultures.

Everybody Dreams, but Not the Same

Some reasons why people give up on their dreams is because of money, family, and friends.  If a person does not have enough money or have good grades in high school, then they can not go to college.  College requires money and good grades, otherwise one will not be accepted into the college.  Moving away from your family may be hard to do, but you have to do it eventually.  Some people decide to never move away from their family, so they never achieve their dream.  Finally, the fear of losing friends can cause someone not to follow their dream.  If you move away from your friends, you will probably never talk to each other again.  Money, family, and friends are some reasons people give up on dreams.

Friendship

My friends and I have many similarities and differences. Since my friends and I are friends, that means we share the same friends. When my friends and I hang out, we do things we all enjoy. I mean yes we fight, but it’s funny when we fight because of how comfortable we are with each other. We can say the most random thing about one another and not get upset. A friend is someone that you can relate with. If you didn’t then you wouldn’t get along too well. Being my friend means you’re nice, kind, funny, and respectful. When you have a friend you should be able to connect with them. If you aren’t alike then you can’t connect. My friends and iI connect, get  along, laugh at each other in a kidding way, and fight because of how much we get along. My friends are different from me by them being in sports. I’m the sporty type, but I don’t put myself out there to get  onto teams and become better at them. I am also smarter than my friends. Sometimes my friends are also rude to other people and I’m not a rude/ mean person. In The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, Rowdy and Junior are still friends because they get along. Rowdy and Junior have been friends for so long that they obey each other and don’t argue. When you grow up with someone you become like them. I believe it is better to have friends like you because if you and your friend are not alike then you wouldn’t have anything in common.
A good friend is someone who is always there for you. Someone who is not fake or judgemental. Like they give suggestions and don't just judge you. You should have a lot in common and some differences also but not to many because then you won't have anything in common. And lastly, a good friend likes to have a good time and are not shy or boring.

Why you need friends

I am both different and similar to my friends. I am similar to my friends because I am crazy like them and act weird all the time when I am around them. I am different when it comes to strength, I am like Rowdy. I am tough and will stick up for my friends if they have been bullied or hurt, I will go confront the person who bullied or hurt my friends and put an end to it. I think it is better to be both similar and different from your friends. It's good to be similar to your friends so then you can relate to things they have or do, and get along with them easier. It is good to be different from them so them so then they can teach you things and you could teach them things, and learn to have more patience to get along or make new friends with new people.

Chapter 3, #4/Daily Question

What makes a good friend is their loyalty towards you, somebody that always has your back, and a fun person. I think you should have friends that are somewhat different for you but you guys have somethings in common. My friends and I have many differences but we also have things in common. Junior and Rowdy are way different from each other but they are alike in other ways. Rowdy is tough, not so smart, and mean. Junior is not so tough, very smart, and nice. What make them alike is their home life, Rowdy and Junior's parents are drinkers. Friendships don't always last forever, just like we are seeing in the last chapter we read. Backstabbing, talking behind your friends backs, making rumors, and moving states or changing schools can end a friendship.

are your friends really your friends?!

Things that make a good friend are that they need to have a couple things in common with you. In Juniors and Rowdys case the only thing they have in common is that they both read comics. But the comics they read arent even the same genre or type. I honestly dont think Rowdy and Juniors relationship is good. They are so different its not good. Junior is the quiet shy studious type and Rowdy's the rude big bully type.

Different friends are good

Its always good to have your little "group" of friends or clique. I am very close with all my friends and we all share almost the exact same interests. I always love having those friends that you share interests with, and who you can always trust with anything. Sometimes though different friends are the best. With different friends you may not share the same interests but it allows you to try different things you may not of ever thought of. Also when i met most of my friends we were all very different from eachother. Neverless when we spent more weekends and school days together we started liking the same things and now i have people in my life that i call my bestfriends.

Similar to friends

I am very similar to most of my friends and we get along really well. The people I'm closest to are my friends Angel, Cameron and Ryan. The three of us are always getting each other into new things and we talk a lot. Angel has been my best friend since 6th grade orientation. Him and I are both musically talented and he's always been like a brother to me. Ryan has also been my friend since 6th grade and him and I are inseparable. Cameron and I are really close friends and her and I write songs for the band together all the time. These three people are like my family and I feel like I could put my life into their hands and I'll know they'll always be here for me. Angel is seriously my closest friend and we're basically brothers and he's always been good to me. Him and I are always thinking of crazy ideas of how to make our band's live shows exciting. Cameron is the type of girl that will come up with the most bizarre ideas ever and will somehow make them a reality. She said that on one of our live shows, her and I are going to take spray cheese on stage and spray it in the crowd. And Ryan is just the kind of guy that you can easily get along with and have so much fun with. In 7th grade him and I went to see Avengers and we were making jokes for half the movie. But in all honesty, the reason these 3 people are my closest friends is because we can look past each other's imperfections and quirks and see someone with a big heart and a kind personality

Giving Up Dreams

In Sherman Alexie's "Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian" Juniors sister Mary gives up on her dreams of writing. Mary had this great idea of writing romance novels but gave up on them and became depressed. Many people give up on dreams because they think they are childish, need money, are influenced by others, or lose the willingness to chase their dreams. So many people give up on their dreams but the few that work hard and don't give up become successful. Mary could have worked hard instead of shying away from her dream and possibly been a successful writer. If one works hard to make their dreams a reality it is possible, but not always, they will be successful and happy with themselves.

Friends!

What is being a true friend? A friend is trustworthy, they will always be there when you fall. They don't care how you look or how you act they just will be your friend anyway you are if they are a true friend. In the book Rowdy and Junior are true friends they are very different , opposites you could even say. Rowdy is angry, likes to fight all the time and has a broken home. Junior is shy, quiet and loves his family and home. There friendship and just friendships in general are different from everyone elses but everyone has a unique friendship in there own way.

Mary, the long lost dreamer.

Mary, Juniors sister lives at home. She leads the life of a regular Spokane Indian woman. She had dreams, ambitions, places she wanted to go, but the reservation constrained her. There is no hope in the Spokane neighborhood. Mary should be an excellent example to Junior, that he should take this opportunity to leave to reveal & open up a thousand more doors of dreams. Junior should look at Mary, get up and leave because he realizes that there is more hope in other places, rather than the reservation. Even though Mary was less fortunate she is a great way for Junior to learn and lead a better life. Mary is living with her parents as a young adult because she never left the reservation. She stayed in the wrong place, therefore ruining her chances of ever becoming what her heart truly desires.
Rowdy is a bad influence on junior because he is bad and dont care about other people. Rowdy likes to fight and fighting dose not get you anywhere in life. Junior is not like that at all so if he starts doing things like that then he is getting that from Rowdy. The things that make Rowdy do things like that is his dad beats him and dose not show him love.  If Junior leaves him he is going to fight more and act bader. He wouldnt have anything or anyone to rely on or love. Junior is someone that Rowdy cares for.

ch.3 #4 daily question

Friends are your closest thing to you besides your family. Most friends re alike in many ways but can also be very different. For example both friens can love sports but 1 will play basketball and one will play football however both could play lacrosse. Most of my friends and i are very alike thats how we get along very well, for example we both have the same goals and ideas but we also disagree a lot. Personally its best to have a mix of friends that are different and alike to you because then your group of friends will be more diverse and interesting. One of my best friends prefers too be indoors most if the time but i love being outdoors.

Chapter 5 "Hope Against Hope", #2 by Stephanie Mondik

What Junior's sister, Mary, did was she didn't pursue her dream. Mary didn't try to become a writer she didn't go see an editor or anything she just gave up, just stop trying to become a writer. I think it was mainly because she lost hope, like Mr. P said a lot of people on their Indian reservation lose hope and don't pursue their dreams. Many things can make someone give up on their dream. Some excuses people have to stop pursuing their dreams would be they don't have the time, money, or energy to do some of the things they want to do. Another big reason why people give up on their dreams is that they lose hope just like Mary. For example, if someone wanted to become an executive of a big company and they don't get it after a year or so, they lose hope and stop trying as hard. That is why Mary gave up on her dreams and why other people do too.

Rowdy the bully

In the novel, "The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian" we meet Rowdy, Junior's (the main character) best friend. Rowdy is described as tough and angry, i think the cause of his anger is because of his parent's ignorance. Some kids that express their anger through physical activity (like bullying) is mostly because they need attention or some love. I would say Rowdy is a bully because he picks on innocent kids just to make himself feel better. "He took on three first graders during a snowball fight because one of them had thrown a piece of ice." This shows how he lets out his anger on other people.

My Interesting Friendship

My Interesting Friendship

I'm not really sure if I am that much different or similar to my friends, I don't hang with them that often to know. I think its better to have a variety of different friends because it would be more enjoyable to hang out with new people, try new things and not do the same things over and over. That is the joy of have friends that are not much alike you, as long as they are not disrespectful. Nobody likes being friends with somebody that always ignores you, excludes you from everything and does everything to not hang out with you. Maybe this is why I don't have that much friends because they are always ignoring me. Why can't more people be accepting to those they ignore.
Im very diffrent from my freinds im very random from the rest I wouldnt want my freinds to be like me beacuse somtimes theres thing that you cant stand about your self and you just want to be or see somthing diffrent so if you are the same as your freinds or there the same as you, you would tend to get a little more annoyed by it. This realtes to the book because Rowdy and Junior seem to be very good freinds and there nothing alike.

it is good to be friends with all people

I think that it is good to have both friends you have everything in common and friends that you don't really like the same activities. So, the friend that you don't really have a lot in common can teach you new things. Like I have a bunch of friends that are really into cars and BMX and skating and I don't like or know how to do any of the things they do. And its also good to have friends that you have a lot in common with so you can hang out and do those things with them and become better friends. And maybe you can learn to like the things that your other friends like and then you become closer friends. That's why its good to be friends with both friends that you have a lot in common with  and friends you don't have that much in common with.

Chapter 3 #4 Friends

Chapter 3 #4
Some of my friends are similar to me and some are different from me. Me and some of my friends like comic books and some like Metal (music). I think having friends that are different and that are the same as you just as important as the other. Friends who are different from you, you can learn from them and try to like what they like. It would also give you the opportunity to teach them what you like so that you both can talk about it and so you can teach them and they can teach you. It is also important for a friend to have something in common as you so you both have something to talk about and and share what you liked about it. It is much easier to have things in common but if you have friends who are different it can give you more of a variety to talk about or do together.

HARDSHIP!

Colin LaPlante
Question 8 #1

When I was a little kid my parents were struggling with money. I wanted to play football, but my parents were concerned about the money. I continued to argue my side on why I wanted to play football, and after a decent amount of one sided arguments I convinced my parents to let me play. My parents wanted the best for me. After my best friend figured out he needed some time to vent, and he hated me for a good few weeks. There was hardship for me because I HATE wasting my parents money, even for my birthday I do not like getting gifts. This relates to the novel because, he went through hardship of the school being expensive and it being a strain on his parents. Like in the novel Rowdy was affected by this just like my friend was.
